The set from REAR WINDOW consisted of 31 apartments (8 completely furnished) and 1000 arc lights to simulate sunlight. Hitchcock felt the buildings weren't tall enough and had the studio ground floor torn out, thus revealing the studio basement which acted as the courtyard/street level.
